Visual Communication of Jazz Musical Expression in the Manga Blue Giant

Abstract

The representation of the sound result in a narrative in images implies an inter-artistic transposition. A qualitative analysis of the Japanese manga Blue Giant, written and illustrated by Shin’ichi Ishizuka, shows how the author focuses on manga-specifi c graphic
resources, body language, and shot compositions infl uenced by cinema (all of them different from the representation of other musical styles), prioritizing the transmission of emotion.
