Abstract

Since its crystallization and expansion more than half a century ago, higher jazz studies have used the combo as the main tool for group performance. Successive cultural and pedagogical trends have conditioned the teaching task towards the selection of different repertoires, highlighting the recognition of bebop as the lingua franca of jazz, the tribute to the entire arc of the African-American tradition and the openness to other music.
